Site Visit To Muzium Telekom

The objectives of this visit were to create awareness in students about the history of telecommunications in Malaysia and to expose students to various technological developments in the telecommunications industry.

This half-day visit started with a briefing by Shahir, from TM. He explained the history of telecommunications in Malaysia starting with the first telephone in Perak 1874 until the high-speed Internet that we have today.

Malaysia’s telecommunications history began in 1870 through the Morse code telegraph service connecting the island of Malacca and Singapore to London via telegraphic submarine cables.

After that, telegram services between Taiping and Kuala Kangsar were introduced in 1876. In 1891, the first telephone was installed in Kuala lumper 15 years after it was created by Alexander Graham Bell.

“The TM representatives were very friendly and the activity was fun” said one of the students. Students participated in a group activity where they had to complete a questionnaire given by the TM staff.

The questionnaire was about the history of telecommunications and they had to find the answers from the posters inside the museum.

“In class you learn about the digital systems in telecommunications, but here in TM Museum you will learn how telecommunications began” said Ms Eryana Eyida Hussin, the organiser for the visit.

Students were introduced to the first mobile phone used in Malaysia which costed USD4000 attached to a very large battery that could hold up to 10 days. Back then, the number of users were less; thus, it had wide coverage. Nowadays, the price is cheaper, with smaller sizes but still providing wide coverage.

The visit ended with light refreshments and Fahmi from TM announced the winner of the group activity.

The visit was an enlightening one as students got to increase their knowledge in the telecommunications industry in Malaysia by discovering new facts and information on the topic.
