The Young Innovator’s Challenge 2018

The UCSI University Robotic Club recently hosted the Young Innovators Challenge (YIC) 2018 Kuala Lumpur state level competition. The competition was attended by UCSI’s Faculty of Engineering, Technology and Built Environment Professor Dato’ Dr Ahmad Ibrahim and Assistant Professor Dr Elango Natarajan,  CEO of Yayasan Sime Darby Hajjah Yatela Zainal Abidin and Principal Consultant of Chumbaka Dr Chew Yen Seng,

Participants came from various schools and education centres totaling 17 teams. Judges included academicians and also industry experts. Winners of the state level competition will participate in the upcoming National Accelerator Camp 2018 which is to be held at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil on the 19th - 22nd September 2018.

The Young Innovators Challenge is a platform provided for millennials to showcase their invention skills in various industries such as Food and Agriculture, Automotive/Mobility, Healthcare, Home and Shelter, Heavy Equipment and Machinery, and Retail and Customer Journey.

Students from various schools within Kuala Lumpur showcased their best efforts in building a working concept prototype that can performs certain tasks controlled either by an Arduino microcontroller or a Raspberry Pi microcomputer.

The Gold Award went to Star TEK (SMK Aminuddin Baki) with the project description of Home and Shelter. Their concept was simple: Everyone uses the bathroom. At the same time many people have injuries in the bathroom. This is because when they fall, other people may not realise they have fallen and this leaves them stranded in the bathroom for a long period of time. This increases the risk of permanent injury and/or death.

Their project helps to detect whether a person has fallen in the bathroom and alerts others. But it is not limited to the bathroom. This project aims to reduce the number of injuries and deaths, mainly in the bathroom.

Silver Award 1 was given to Johannian B (SMK St. John) with the concept of the ‘smart house’ which can gain energy from sunlight and recycle water from rain. This in turn increases the efficiency of energy consumption.

The Silver Award 2 was won by CHKL 1 (Chong Hwa High School) where their focus was on Automotive/Mobility, to solve problems faced by the majority in the transportation industry.

The Bronze Award 1 was won by Home Invaders (SMK Damansara Utama) where they came up with a similar panic button in a toilet for emergencies to warn loved ones and avoid delays in seeking treatment.

Finally, the Bronze Award 2 was given to AI Team (The Sequoia Academy) where their aim was to make life easier. Their concept involved helping people remember to turn off the air-conditioning and close the windows.

The Young Innovators Challenge 2018 competition that was held aims to encourage students to get hands-on experience as the platform that is provided is both meaningful and beneficial to them. It also aims to increase the knowledge of students and get them ready for the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Other sponsors for the event included the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Next Gen Technology and IEEERAS Malaysia Chapter.
