KUCHING: UCSI University Sarawak Campus’s Hospitality students successfully launched a series of activities and events at the campus on 30th June 2014, from 8am to 4pm. The events aimed at raising awareness of the number of unschooled children in Sarawak and also to raise funds for D’Wira Childcare Centre. 

D’Wira Childcare Centre is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that is dedicated to help children from underprivileged families to break out of the poverty cycle. The centre takes care of unschooled children and provides them with quality education and nurturing, irregardless of their age and race. There are 76 children in the centre, coming from families that barely earn enough to make ends meet. In fact, the monthly fees of RM20 per child cannot be afforded by most of the families. 

A charity food fair and car washing events were organized on the fundraising day. Besides, the students of UCSI University also received cash donation, clothing and books from the local community and general public. The students who organized this event believe strongly that education is the key to unlock the door to a better future for these children and hope to assist the centre who is taking this important responsibility of brightening the students’ future through the fundraising event. 

Through this event, the organizing committee has successfully raised an amount amounting to three thousand ringgit for the childcare center. Apart from that, the event also received sponsors of complementary stay and buffet vouchers as lucky draw from Riverside Majestic Hotel and Merdeka Palace Hotel. 

To show their care and responsibility to the children, the students also organized a visit to the childcare center on the 3rd July 2014 to mingle around and play games with the children at the centre.
