24 AugUCSI UNIVERSITY’S SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING SHOWCASES THE CREATIVITY OF THEIR FINAL YEAR STUDENTS
Kuala Lumpur, 24 August 2011 - UCSI University’s School of Engineering successfully held their Engineering Exhibition together with the University’s Open Day. The exhibition is among one of the events lined up for the 25th Anniversary celebrations this year and has attracted many prospective students together with their parents.
70 students from Communication and Electronic Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mechatronic Engineering showcased their final year project in the exhibition after four years of hard work. Students presented the concept and operational ideas of their project with such dedication and enthusiasm to the public throughout the day.
Associate Professor Engineer Dr Jimmy Mok Vee Hoong, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Built Environment, said that the exhibition is an excellent platform for all students to go through to gain exposure and technical competency in terms of being an engineer or an inventor and to defy the stereotype that engineers do not know how to express their views. He advised students to be equipped with technical competency in order to stand out from other graduates and compete in the real world, contributing to the society.
“We are hoping for a bigger crowd next year as more students enter into their final year studies, including students from Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The School of Engineering is still evolving to cater to the society’s growing needs; we will definitely do our part to contribute to our internal and external society.”
“I am very excited to see all the students’ project today. I am proud to say that for the past one month, students have won several internationally acclaimed awards. Nine students have won three gold, one silver and three bronze awards in the third annual 'Life Invention Gifted Contest for Green Growth in Korea 2011’ and we just received good news today that another five of our students have once again bagged five awards, one semi grand prize, two gold and two bronze, in another competition held in Korea,” said Ir. Ahmad bin Tamby Kadir, Head of Civil Engineering, who is keen on invention and the ‘green’ concept.
He stated that lecturers are just facilitators, motivating and encouraging students to think out of the box because great ideas come from great students. “These awards are examples of world recognitions of our students’ performance in this university,” said Ir. Ahmad.
Christopher Tham, graduate of Communication and Electronic Engineering earlier this year pointed out that the industrial training at the end of every year has increased his exposure to the industry. “I think that is the selling point of the University. Lecturers are also friendly, approachable and knowledgeable both in theory and in practical,” he said.
The centerpiece of the exhibition that attracted everyone’s attention was the “Ping Pong Turning Machine” designed by Chan Pak Leong, a final year student of Mechatronic Engineering. The design integrates creativity and entertainment to produce a highly innovative machine that automatically collects and launches ping pong balls. Chan thanked the lecturers for their guidance and knowledge throughout his studies at the University.
Besides that, final year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Odewale Olajide Ahmed from Nigeria, said that the University has given him many happy memories that he will cherish. His project, “Smart Battery Management System”, uses dual method to monitor the state of health of batteries and charges them using solar power in order to go green.
He urges students to strive to be a part of the school from the start to experience and learn. Odewale said, “Let yourself pass through the University and let the University pass through you.”
