UCSI University Graduates 2000 Over Students

Kuala Lumpur, 15 July, 2012 - UCSI University's Convocation Ceremony 2012 witnessed 2,542 graduating students receiving their scrolls, commemorating years of hard work and dedication in their education.

Embassy representatives – namely, the High Commissioner from the Kenya High Commission and Consul of the Republic of Uganda High Commission, among others – celebrated the graduating class of 2012 together with the University's chancellor, vice chancellor, deans, directors and other faculty heads.

Notably, one of the event's main highlights was the conferment of the title of Emeritus Professor to Professor Dr Kwan Teck Kim, who has made significant and meritorious contributions to research and education in the fields of science and medicine for more than 35 years.

Apart from his research efforts, Professor Dr Kwan is recognised for pioneering and establishing the University's Faculties of Applied Sciences, Medicine and Health Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and for initiating the Curtin University of Technology's (2+2) twinning programme in Pharmacy with the University.

Outstanding students such as Tan Lea Ngar, this year's valedictorian, was present at the ceremony as well.

Tan is a multiple Dean's List Award holder and has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities in myriad roles at the University. She was elected as the Events Director of the Student Council; the Organising Chairperson for Unifest, an outdoor concert to support local music talents; and Head Designer for the University's Hailer Newsletter, to name a few.

Two-time UCSI University Presidential Award winner Khong Mei Li is another bright talent. Having bagged the "Best Oral Presenter" award at the recent 23rd Intervarsity Biochemistry Seminar (IBS) for her unique presentation on the origins of poisonous organelles and toxins in Aurelia aurita (moon jellyfish), Khong now intends to further her research with the hope of making therapeutic discoveries.

Tiffany Chung Wei Ning, Gold Medal recipient in the 3rd Life Invention Competition for Green Growth in Korea 2011, also celebrated the momentous occasion with her fellow peers. Keen on environmental conservation, her research utilised compressed air from human footsteps to generate electricity. Taking things further, Chung is now extrapolating her work to road humps and railways. Her research has already been recognised by the International Conference on Renewable Engineering Technology and the 6th International Conference on Advanced Computational Engineering and Experimenting 2012.

Exceptional individuals such as Professor Dr Kwan, Tan, Tiffany and Khong contribute positive efforts to the nation's growth in education, in line with the Government initiatives - under Entry Point Project 10 (EPP 10) - to produce more highly-skilled employees by 2020. UCSI Group, the parent organisation of the University, has been appointed by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education to spearhead EPP 10.
