UCSI University Successfully Organised Its Vintage Flea Market

Kuching, 10 March, 2012 - UCSI University B.A. (Hons) Event and Tourism Management students successfully organized its first "Vintage Flea Market" on 10 March to encourage support for local businesses and locally made products. The event started from 11am to 4pm and was took place at the UCSI University Sarawak Campus. The event received unexpected good response with more than 500 visitors.

Total of 40 vendors from local retailers throughout Kuching selling a wide selection of goods including fashion accessories, women's apparel, handbags, cosmetics, fragrances, toys, cupcakes, foods and beverages took part in this event. Apart from that, there were about 23 parties sponsoring the lucky draws for the day.

"We were very excited and anticipating for the events after our hard work for about 3 months," said the Project Manager of the event, Jemima Rinai Joseph. "We had been facing lots of challenges going through the planning and preparation for the event. With only 16 members in our team, we were urged to strategically plan the event and properly divide our task. All of us have to be multi-tasking even though specific job had been allocated due to shortage of manpower. We had been undergoing a tough time organizing this event as we were lack of experience and at the same time, we will have to cover our exams as well. It is quite challenging for us to balance our studies and activities but we manage to walk through these challenges and achieved what we were expecting. This is the first ever big project been successfully held in our university's compound" said Jemima with a wide smile on her face, proud with her team.

"Teamwork is extremely important in organizing this event. Without any of us from the team, I believe that the event will not come out to be successful. Well, all my members had actually found themselves talented in some area such as designing and marketing through this event," she laughed. "As the Project Manager, it is important for me to lead the team whereby I am very sure that the leadership that I have learned will be useful in my future."

"Salute to our lecturers, Ms Lah Wan Yee and Mr Ben, they have been giving us precious advice and guiding us throughout the process of sourcing for resources, planning and marketing the event as well as necessary correction action to be done. And not to forget, special thanks to Mdm Gracie Geikie for allocating her precious time arranging a workshop on candles making. From the workshop, we learned the process of making candles and manage to set up a booth to sell our handmade candles for non-profit purposes, but to support the event" added Jemima.
