The Green Office Award honours the winners of the Green Office competition, conducted from September to December 2023. The primary aim of the Green Office initiative is to strengthen UCSI's commitment to responsibility, showcasing a dedication to ethical operations. Recognising the growing importance of sustainability, implementing eco-friendly policies becomes pivotal for maintaining a positive corporate image. The event was held at the recent UCSI Group Townhall Meeting which commenced with an address by Dato’ Peter T. S. Ng, the Founder and Executive Chairman of UCSI Group, followed by a Q&A session. Mr. Leong Sat Sing, Vice-President of Group Sustainability, then proceeded by delivering the presentation of the Green Office Awards 2023. The winners of Green Office Awards were the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science as the champion, the Global Engagement Office as the 1st runner-up, the Student Enrolment Centre as the 2nd runner-up, UCSI Property and Leasing Office as the 3rd runner-up, UCSI Group Finance Office as the 4th runner-up, and Le Quadri Hotel Management Office as the 5th runner-up. These awards embody a comprehensive approach aligned with global efforts to address climate change and environmental challenges, making them a vital aspect of responsible and forward-thinking practices.
On January 30th, 2024, UCSI hosted an event at Le Quadri Hotel focused on the growing importance of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) principles for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. The event commenced with a keynote address from Distinguished Professor Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid, followed by an impactful introduction from UCSI's Vice President for Group Sustainability, Mr Leong Sat Sing.
The panel featured subject experts and experienced ESG adopters who shared valuable insights.The event included a panel discussion with industry leaders namely, Ms Emily Oi (Business Council for Sustainable Development), Ms Tan Zhi Ying (United Nations Global Compact for Malaysia and Brunei), Mr Lim Chee Yoong (Thumbprints UTD Sdn Bhd) and Mr John Loh (Emerging EPC Sdn Bhd). The conference concluded with a presentation on the Simplified Guide to ESG Reporting for Supply Chain, by Mr Al Fadzriq (Capital Markets Malaysia). It was a valuable opportunity for attendees to gain knowledge and guidance on ESG principles and reporting.
Our esteemed guest of honour, YB Dato' Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, led the official inauguration at UCSI University KL Campus. Following the launch, an engaging dialogue on the future of higher education institutions in Malaysia unfolded, featuring YB Dato' Seri Diraja Dr Zambry and our distinguished adjunct professor, Khairy Jamaluddin.
On January 22, 2024, UCSI and Hainan Tropical Ocean University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a collaborative partnership in the field of research and education. The MoU Signing Ceremony was held at the UCSI campus and was attended by representatives from both universities.
The objectives of this MoU are to promote joint research activities, organise scientific conferences, seminars, and workshops, facilitate graduate and doctoral student exchanges, and encourage staff exchanges and communication based on research project funding support. The partnership aims to foster a mutually beneficial relationship between the two universities and to enhance the quality of research and education in the field of tropical ocean studies.
UCSI University makes history in the Malaysian Book of Records as the first Malaysian institution to publish in the prestigious Harvard Data Science Review. Represented by Assoc Prof Dr Mehrbakhsh Nilashi, Distinguished Prof Dr Ooi Keng Boon, and Prof Dr Garry Tan Wei Han, with Dr Nilashi as the principal author, the trio lectures at UCSI’s Graduate Business School. Prof Ooi and Prof Tan also achieved recognition as the first Malaysians to publish in the Review.
On December 8, 2023, UCSI University and the Medical University of Silesia Katowice signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Under this MoU, both institutions will commit to research collaboration, particularly in the areas of medical sciences and staff exchange.
UCSI University and The Malaysia Entrepreneurs Development Association (PUMM) are teaming up to establish an education fund for deserving students across Malaysia. A pool of RM300,000 has been set up to cater to impact an initial batch of 30 to 50 scholars who will further their studies at Foundation level at UCSI University's campuses at Kuala Lumpur and Springhill, as well as UCSI College. Under the partnership, PUMM will promote the education fund through its nationwide network and direct selected students to UCSI.
UCSI University's Pro-Chancellor and Yayasan Chow Kit Trustee, Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin ibni Tuanku Muhriz recently launched UCSI’s School of Architecture and Built Environment's Ar.KiDs project. This collaborative effort engaged students from the Diploma in Architectural Studies and Interior Architecture programmes alongside partners Yayasan Chow Kit and OTCQ Architects. Their mission was to craft a secure and vibrant playground for underprivileged children.
Notable figures present at the event included Ar Oscar Tan Lee Teck, the principal of OTCQ Architects as well as Associate Professor EUR ING Ir Ts Dr Ang Chun Kit, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Technology, and Built Environment. The outcome of this initiative will see the completed playground gifted to a chosen orphanage, creating a playful, happy and secure place for the kids who really need it.
UCSI Eagles and Rising Star celebrated a momentous Memorandum of Understanding on November 15th, solidifying a strategic collaboration aimed at increasing their prospects of gaining victory in the Major Basketball League. This teamwork marks a fresh start for UCSI Rising Star, blending players from both UCSI Eagles and Rising Star into a basketball powerhouse. The signing ceremony was honoured by the esteemed presence of the founder and executive chairman of UCSI Group Dato' Peter Ng, founder and executive chairman of Rising Star Kelvin Than and head coach at Rising Star Ee Kee Lip.
UCSI celebrates nine esteemed professors for their inclusion in Stanford's World's Top 2% Scientists list, a notable 50% increase from last year's six. Congratulations to Distinguished Profs Dr Phang Siew Moi and Dr Ooi Keng Boon, Senior Prof Dr Garry Tan Wei Han, Profs Dr Richard Peter Bailey and Dato’ Dr Ng Seik Weng, and Assoc Profs Dr Mehrbakhsh Nilashi, Dr Eric Chan Wei Chiang, Dr Eugene Aw Cheng Xi and Dr Shayla Islam for this remarkable achievement. We would also like to offer a heartfelt congratulations to all recipients of the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS). The event was honoured by the presence of UCSI Vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir and UCSI Group executive chairman Dato’ Peter Ng.
